Jonghyun could notice it instantly, the way Taemin almost seemed attracted to him. Not in a sexual kind of way but literally - the way he moved forward like that, gazing at Jonghyun like he was a work of art. There was something so peculiar about the way it made the singer feel. He was used to being stared at, recorded and videotaped but he wasn’t used to someone, so close, taking such interest in him. Taemin wasn’t just staring, it felt like he was examining him; looking at every detail of his features in a kind of wondered amazement. Letting out a small laugh, he looked at him with amusement, “That’s pretty ironic coming from someone who seemingly always speaks in riddles.”
Curiosity was getting the better of him as he listened to the other man talk about his view of him. It was interesting what someone thought of you, wasn’t it? What they decided you were based on a list of observations they had accumulated. Jonghyun felt a variation of surprise at the other’s words and he raised an eyebrow, “Too early to know for sure, huh.” The drinks arrived and he reached forward to take a sip from his water, the straw bending forward and touching his lips. It was interesting for him to hear someone doubt his good nature when everyone else always assumed nothing but the best.
“Yes, I—” Jonghyun paused, his mind now reeling as he looked at Taemin, trying to find the hole in his words. “You’re odd.” Was all he could muster before smiling and leaning forward, meeting him in a curious hover above the middle of the table, “But I think I like it.”
There were people, from time to time, who became uncomfortable. People who became awkward, who wanted him to move away, to stop staring, to not look at all. There were always people as such, especially for the likes of himself. And while he could persuade them with a silver tongue and charm worth gold if he set his mind to it, make them dazed with him the way he could be with them… it was not a way to get to know people. It was a way to get close, to get what he needed, to raise the bar of what some people would never think acceptable. So while it did not occur to Taemin in that very moment how Jonghyun was not shying back from his stare, it was, nevertheless, a welcomed change. And it was true, after all, what Jonghyun thought. He was watching him closely, and surely rightfully so.
“Is someone speaking in riddles?” he wondered out, an amused flicker in his eyes, before he grinned roughly, giving away that at least he seemed very aware Jonghyun had spoke of him that moment. “Why, you must solve them, then. Chop chop, or what you people say. Chop chop chop chop… how long before you’ve solved them?” He tilted his head to the side, eyebrows raising questioningly. “Hmh…?” Biting lightly on his pale lower lip, a low chuckled sound left the back of his throat.
He nodded to Jonghyun’s other words as the drinks arrived, his gaze briefly catching on the second glass of water; it did not take a genius to figure out it was supposedly his, and while he was not interested in drinking it, he did let a pale, thin hand curl around it, drawing it near so that he could look into the clear liquid. It rippled from the movement, before steadying gently into a clear surface; the straw was a landing for bubbles, small at first, almost miniscule, before growing larger, painstakingly slow.
Blinking out of his thoughts as he became aware of Jonghyun leaning forth, he kept staring into the water for a second or two, before raising his own gaze. Up, up, to meet his, void of any emotion for a longer moment. Then, he smiled.
